Today’s Thought:

Prayers with hands lifted up and maybe our eyes opened and lifted towards the Heavens are often when we find ourselves in awe of God. During this time many lift their hands or face their palms upward to receive and absorb the words or prayers that are being spoken.

Some of the most memorable stories and miracles from the Bible have come from standing postures that look up to Jesus or Heaven. David is often found praying with arms lifted up. He was in continual danger; care and fear held his eyes awake and gave him wearisome nights; but he comforted himself with thoughts of God.

In Psalm 63, we see David again value God’s loving-kindness more than his own life. David stopped often to praise God with his joyful lips and arms stretched out towards the Heavens. Originally, the idea probably was that the hands should be ready to receive the blessings which God would bestow. But, later on, the lifting up of hands seems to have been regarded as symbolizing the lifting up or the heart.

Do you raise your hands during prayer? During worship? Does it feel natural? Uncomfortable? Praying with your arms lifted connects you to God and the blessings waiting for you.
